Taking note of the rising popularity of Hindi, US State Department spokesperson for South Asia, Helena White, spoke exclusively to WION in Hindi about the recently concluded elections in Pakistan.

A known South Asia expert, who has also served here, White, read out translation of US State Department statement on Pakistan elections in Hindi for the audience in India.

"America is aware of the election results in Pakistan, and we would like to applaud the courage of the people of Pakistan, especially the women voters. Through their vote, they showed thir determination towards the development of Pakistan. We strongly condemn the attack in Quetta and those who tried to derail the election process. The camp down on freedom of expression and communication shows the dedication of officials in carrying out free and fair elections. The US and EU observation reports state that although a few positive steps were taken during the elections, it was marred by freedom of expression," she said.

In a direct attack on Hafeez Sayed, whose party contested elections this year, White said that the US had strong reservations over terrorists contesting the polls, but we laud the courage of the people of Pakistan who have rejected such candidates.

She also said that the US hopes to work well with the new Pakistani government.
