A day after Donald Trump warned Pakistan for providing safe havens to terrorists, Islamabad has reportedly conveyed to the United States that it will call off its efforts in the Afghan reconciliation process.

Trump, in his first prime-time televised address to war- weary Americans as commander-in-chief ruled out a hasty withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, and slammed Pakistan for its continued support to terrorist groups.

According to the Express Tribune, Pakistan has warned the US and asked Trump administration to change its new policy of intimidation and coercion towards Islamabad.

Through its diplomatic channels, Pakistan has conveyed that it will set its strategy for a peaceful Afghanistan in view of its national security policy, the daily reported quoting sources.

Warning Islamabad of consequences if it continues to do support terrorists, Trump had said, "For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror. The threat is worse because Pakistan and India are two nuclear-armed states whose tense relations threaten to spiral into conflict. And that could happen."

"We can no longer be silent about Pakistan's safe havens for terrorist organisations, the Taliban, and other groups that pose a threat to the region and beyond," Trump added.

The report also said that Pakistan has reportedly told US Ambassador David Hale that neither was Islamabad dependent on Washington for its defence system nor did its economy need American financial assistance.

The US President, in his address, had also reached out to India seeking an enhanced role for New Delhi, especially in the economic field, to bring peace and stability in Afghanistan.
