In another document dump targeting the US Democratic party, Wikileaks on Friday published what it claims are hacked e-mails of President Barack Obama.

The site published the alleged Obama e-mails - seven of them - with an e-mail address claiming to be that of the POTUS:  bobama@ameritech.net

The e-mails are from 2008 before and around the time Obama was about to win the election and become America's first African-American president. They reveal plans to form a diverse team for the Obama administration and "staffing a transition economic team".

E-mail on Election Day, November  4, 2008:

Co-chair of Obama’s transition team, John Podesta requests Obama not to accept an invitation to a G-20 summit held on November 15, on the chance that outgoing President George W Bush extends an invitation after his win.

The memo stated:

John Podesta, Hacked e-mail

On the chance that President Bush would raise this with you tonight, I wanted you to be aware that it is the unanimous recommendation for your advisors that you NOT attend. As long as you are aware of that, we can review the contents of the memo tomorrow."

Podesta even attached a memo to the transition team weighing the pros and cons of going to the summit. One of the pros states, " Will provide a platform for globally visible engagement on the most."

A con states, "Attendance a mere ten days following your election would thrust you squarely into the debate over immediate crisis response, changes to international organizations, and new initiatives on global regulation - all without having had sufficient chance to develop and evaluate proposals."

Obama was absent when the G-20 summit commenced.

E-mail dates October 6, 2008:

Obama receives an e-mail from transition team member Mike Froman with the subject line "Diversity". In it, he sends recommendations for senior-level positions within the Obama administration.

The memo states:

Mike Froman, Hacked e-mails

A list of African American, Latino and Asian American candidates, divided between Cabinet/Deputy and Under/Assistant/Deputy Assistant Secretary levels, as well as lists of senior Native Americans, Arab/Muslim Americans and Disabled Americans. We have longer lists, but these are candidates whose names have been recommended by a number of sources for senior level jobs in a potential Administration."

E-mail dated October 30, 2008:

An e-mail from Podesta to Obama with the subject line "Economic staffing decisions", contained proposed choices for the new commander-in-chief's team:

Excerpts from the e-mail state:

John Podesta, Hacked e-mail

When we got off on the idea of creating an emergency national economic council, we left unresolved two questions that were contained in my 2 page cover memo. First, should Daley or Tarullo run the interim economic staff team in the early days of the transition?"

Podesta was most likely referring to Daniel Tarullo, who in 2009 joined the Federal Reserve Board, and William Daley, who was Obama’s transition economic advisory board and was then appointed Obama’s chief of staff.

Podesta also wanted to know Obama's choice to serve on the interim council: “You added Warren Buffett to the potential list. How do you want to proceed?”

Via a BlackBerry, Obama responded “I will give you an answer on this tomorrow.”

When Obama became president he was only permitted to use a BlackBerry. However, in 2016, he upgraded to a smartphone. Obama recently told Jimmy Fallon, host of the Tonight Show, that many of the phone's basic functions like texting, playing music, calling and taking photos had been disabled for security reasons.

The White House has made no comment on the hacked e-mails. However, US intelligence officials have publicly accused Russia of the numerous cyber attacks on the Democratic Party's e-mails. The Obama e-mails were among 23,000 e-mails stolen from Podesta, who currently serves as Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman.

In the tweet, Wikileaks stated this was the "first batch", signalling there may be more Obama e-mails to come.
