Watch: When men read rape threats sent to women journalists online

It appears men just haven’t learned to deal with a woman with an opinion. Don’t let the civility of the real world fool you, any woman who has been on social media will tell you about how she has been attacked for simply being. The worst of it is usually reserved for female journalists who are bombarded 24/7 on social media. Now two Chicago-based sports journos— Sarah Spain and Julia diCaro— put together a video of men reading out tweets they received.

The men read out the tweets but once it came to reading out threats of rape and violence, the men start to realise what it’s like to be a woman on social media.

We’ve seen something similar on social media in India time and again where top female journalists experience it time and again. In fact, Priya Ramani, when she wrote about the abuse Barkha Dutt, got a fair share of abuse online abuse herself, all the trolls hell-bent on proving their point. The truth is that it’s not just journalists who bear the brunt. Anyone female seems to be fair game.
