US President Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been destroyed.

According to Los Angeles Times, the police arrested Austin Clay, 24, in connection with the apparent act of vandalism.

The police said that Clay strode up to Trump's star off Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue and proceeded to destroy the majority of the star with a pick axe which he was carrying in a guitar case.

Soon afterwards, he surrendered to Los Angeles police and is being held on $20,000 bail.

In a statement, Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, said the president's star will be repaired immediately and asked people to "project their anger in more positive ways than to vandalize a California State landmark".

"The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an institution celebrating the positive contributions of the inductees," Gubler said "When people are unhappy with one of our honorees, we would hope that they would project their anger in more positive ways than to vandalize a California State landmark. Our democracy is based on respect for the law. People can make a difference by voting and not destroying public property," he added.

This is not the first time when Trump's star has been the target of an attack. It was smashed by a man in 2016 shortly after the Access Hollywood recording of Trump bragging about sexual assault surfaced.

The star has also been subjected to defacement with 'swastika', the mute sign and expletives drawn on it on different occasions.
