A US Secret Service agent, in a Facebook post, reportedly said she would not defend President Donald Trump if someone attempted to shoot him.

A senior agent in the Denver field office Kerry O'Grady, made several posting on Facebook during the 2016 presidential election about her support for Hillary Clinton and said she would not honour a US federal law that prohibits her from publicly voicing her political opinions, according to CNN.

The posts have since been deleted after The Washington Examiner reported on them on Tuesday.

The Examiner reports that on Facebook she wrote: "As a public servant for nearly 23 years, I struggle not to violate the Hatch Act. So I keep quiet and skirt the median." She continues, "To do otherwise can be a criminal offence for those in my position. Despite the fact that I am expected to take a bullet for both sides."

"But this world has changed and I have changed. And I would take jail time over a bullet or an endorsement for what I believe to be a disaster to this country and the strong and amazing women and minorities who reside here. Hatch Act be damned. I am with Her," she wrote.

After news of the comment broke, the Secret Service on Tuesday said in a statement it was "aware of the postings and the agency is taking quick and appropriate action."

"Any allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and swiftly investigated."

CNN reports the postings were on O'Grady's personal account and the agency is investigating if they were posted while she was working.
