Former US President Donald Trump wrote a 'very generous' letter to his White House successor President Joe Biden on Wednesday in the Oval Office before leaving the presidential mansion. White House has a tradition for outgoing Presidents to write their successors a letter and leave it for them on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.

"The President wrote a very generous letter. Because it was private, I will not talk about it until I talk to him. But it was generous," Biden told reporters.

It was ambiguous until Wednesday whether former President would maintain the custom of outgoing presidents leaving hand-off letter notes to their successors after Trump choose to skip Biden's inauguration and never formally congratulated him on his election win.

Former spokesperson for the United States Department of the State Jen Psaki told reporters that she was with Biden when he was reading the letter in the Oval Office right before he signed the executive actions. However, she declined to reveal more details on the letter, saying, it "was private, as he (Biden) said to you all".

"It was both generous and gracious, and it was just a reflection of him not planning to release the letter unilaterally, but I wouldn't take it as an indication of a pending call with the former President," Psaki said on Wednesday night.

Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday, ending the four-year term in the White House of Republican Donald Trump. 78-year-old Biden took the oath of office from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts at a solemn ceremony at the US Capitol.

He was sworn in on a 19th-century family Bible that has been in the Biden family since 1893. In his address, Biden spoke about unity following the January 6 US Capitol attack and called on Americans to come together.
