On Monday, US President Barack Obama joined social networking site Twitter, apparently in his personal capacity.

On Monday, US President Barack Obama joined social networking site Twitter, apparently in his personal capacity.

His Twitter handle is @POTUS. Within a couple of hours, he had found 4,26,000 followers. 

His first Tweet read:

It is interesting to know that there is already a Twitter handle called @BarackObama, which has also been verified. However, this is the official handle, as it says: This account is run by Organizing for Action staff. Tweets from the President are signed - bo.

"The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him," says an entry on the official White House blog.

"President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them," it adds.

Obama is currently following 65 people, including Bill Clinton, George W Bush and @FLOTUS, the First Lady's account - but not Hillary Clinton, George W Bush or UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
