The outgoing head of the United Nations team fighting the deadly Ebola outbreak has said that the disease will be ended in 2015.

Anthony Banbury said the Ebola epidemic has killed nearly 8,000 people since December 2013 in mostly Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea where the virus started, reported BBC.

He also said that he and his team were engaged in "an epic battle".

He confessed that his three month mission to achieve the target of 100% safe burials and treatment of 70% of infected people had failed.

Banburry said that the global response of the epidemic had been extremely successful.
