Pakistan’s cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan could not contain his anger as he unleashed a number of tweets on Tuesday, post the speech of United States President Donald Trump.

“We fought 2 wars in Afghanistan at the US behest paying heavy human and economic costs both times. We sacrificed 70,000 Pak lives in US WOT” (War on Terror) Khan wrote in one Tweet.

“Our economy suffered over $100 billion in losses. In addition, there were intangible costs on our society. Time for Pak to say: Never again.”

Earlier, in his speech on Monday while outlining his South Asia strategy, Trump had placed the finger of terror squarely on Pakistan. “The security threats we face in Afghanistan and the broader region are immense. Today, 20 US-designated foreign terrorist organisations are active in Afghanistan and Pakistan — the highest concentration anywhere in the world. For its part, Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror,” Trump said in his speech.

While Islamabad may have been angry, analysts in New Delhi were not all too happy with Trump’s speech. While Trump emphasised the importance that the US placed on its ‘strategic partnership’ with India, the speech clearly showed that Washington expected New Delhi to do much more in the region.

Analysts were quick to point to the not so hidden message in Trump’s speech.  The fact that Trump made it a point to emphasise that India made “billions of dollars worth of trade with the US,” clearly suggested that India ‘owed’ it to the US to do more in Afghanistan, most probably by getting more men on the ground there.

A closer look at the speech shows though Trump condemned Pakistan, the speech went along the lines of past US presidents when referring to South Asia.
