Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Tuesday hit out at US President Donald Trump for his accusation that Islamabad deceived America by sheltering terrorists in return for USD 33 billion aid.

The cricketer-turned-politician said that Trump was ignorant of the facts of the war in Afghanistan and he was pursuing agenda Pakistan's enemies.

“Anyone who is aware of the facts is not prepared to accept Trump’s statement,” Khan told reporters.

"American President is pursuing agenda of our enemies. We should learn the lesson that we will get humiliated and destroyed, if we fight someone else war for money," he was quoted as saying by local media.

He was reacting to Trump's tweet on Monday where he accused Pakistan of giving nothing to the US but "lies and deceit" and providing "safe haven" to terrorists in return for aid over the last 15 years.

In his strongest attack against Pakistan yet, Trump in his first tweet of the year on New Year's day also appeared to suggest he could cut off foreign aid to Pakistan.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" he said.

Pakistan sharply reacted to the accusation and summoned US Ambassador David Hale to register its protest.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif responded immediately and said, "...Will let the world know the truth... difference between facts and fiction."

He said Pakistan had told the Trump administration that it would not do 'no more' for it (the fight against terrorism).

"Pakistan is ready to publicly provide every detail of the US aid that it has received over the last 15 years," the minister said.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has called Cabinet and the National Security Committee meetings to discuss Pakistan's response to Trump's accusation.
