Tamil Nadu: Eight Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Eight fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested on Tuesday by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of fishing in the island nation's waters, a Fisheries Department official said.

The fishermen from Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai district, were fishing near Neduntheevu when they were detained by the Lankan Navy along with their two boats, Fisheries Assistant Director Shivakumar said.

They were later taken to a court in Kangesanthurai, which remanded them to custody till October 3.

This is the second instance of arrest of Indian fishermen in the last fortnight.

Earlier on September 11, twelve fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Martime Boundary Line.
