The Syrian Army uncover a mass grave in the recently recaptured city of Palmyra,  where they found at least 40 corpses, most of them women and children who were brutally murdered by Islamic State (ISIS). Engineers and defence forces in the Masakin al-Jahizia neighbourhood of the city discovered the grave 500 metres from the ancient ruins, reported RT.com

25 corpses have been recovered so far by the army, which includes three children and five females. As the excavation continued, the army unearthed 15 more corpses, all of them belonging to women and children. Examination of the bodies revealed the victims had been brutally tortured and then beheaded. The army continues to excavate the mass grave.

Engineering units with the help of the Russian army are also searching for landmines and explosives hidden by ISIS jihadists before they were driven out of the city. RT reports, close to 3,000 explosive devices were installed in Palmyra. Palmyra, a strategically important location, was seized by ISIS in May 2015.
