Seven people have been killed in an attack at the Iranian parliament on Wednesday and four have been taken hostage on the upper floors of the building, the semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted sources on the ground as saying.  A second suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the shrine of Iran's revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini in south Tehran, state broadcaster IRIB reported.

In latest reports, Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the two attacks on Iran's parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini's shrine, the group's state news agency AMAQ said.
"Fighters from Islamic state attacked Khomeini's shrine and the Iranian parliament in Tehran," the news agency said. Iran is a key player in efforts against the Islamic State group in both Syria and Iraq.

In the first incident, a security guard was killed when four gunmen burst into Tehran's parliament complex, while a gardener was reported dead when several armed assailants entered the grounds of Khomeini's mausoleum in the south of the city, according to the ISNA news agency.

At least eight people were wounded in the attacks, according to reports.

Fars News Agency said that the male assailant escaped the building, but a ranking member of the parliament told that he was captured as he was on the run.

In the second incident, an armed man opened fire at the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in southern Tehran and wounded a number of people on Wednesday, Fars news agency reported.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini launched the Islamic revolution in 1979.

An armed man had entered at the western entrance of the mausoleum and opened fire before blowing himself up with a suicide vest, the site's head of public relations Ali Khalili told the IRNA news agency.

The mausoleum is in southern Tehran, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the parliament building.

Shiite Iran has been singled out as a target by Sunni jihadists, including the Islamic State group, but has largely escaped attacks within its urban centres.
