In a horrific incident a farmer in South Korea killed neighbour’s barking dog and later invited his owner to eat dog-meat for dinner the local police reported. This disgraceful and heinous incident has sparked an online outrage.

The owner was tipped off about the crime by another neighbour. The 62-year-old unnamed man confessed about the crime and told that the owner’s neighbour who killed his dog was irritated by the dog’s constant barking in the street. He then threw a stone at the 2-year-old Welsh Corgi and the dog lost consciousness.

“Only after the dog passed out, he claims, he strangled the animal and cooked it,” a local detective in Pyeongtaek told AFP

“The man then invited his neighbours to share the meal, including the father of the dog-owning family,” he said.

The incident came to light when the owner’s daughter raised an online plea requesting for public support to ensure that the accused be punished sternly. A petition initiated in the case has so far gained over 15,000 signatures.

“We had been all around the town, handing out leaflets containing the dog’s picture, phone number and rewards of one million won ($940), in order to find the missing dog”, the daughter told AFP by phone, asking for her family’s name to be kept anonymous.

“When I reached the man’s house, which is just three doors down from ours, he expressed sympathy, promising to let us know if he found the dog”.

After the dog went missing, the suspect visited the owner the following day. The accused and the owner shared some drinks together and the suspect consoled him over the missing of the dog.

Every year millions of dogs get consumed in South Korea. Dog meat since a long time has been a part of the South Korean cuisines. It is prepared with greasy red meat which is boiled for tenderness and believed to increase energy. But the consumption of dog meat has invariably decreased in South Korea over the years as the people have started embracing dogs as pets instead of livestock. It has also become a taboo among the younger generations there.

Animal activists have pulled up campaigns to ban dog consumptions and have levied fines over 20 million under newly strengthened laws.
