The president of the Republic of Congo's Islamic High Council has announced that full face-veils will be banned to prevent violent extremism in the country.

According to the Independent, Muslims area a minority in the Republic of Congo, in central Africa, bordered by Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

The Islamic council leader said that around 80,000 Muslims were reacting positively to the news in the country. He added that his government would prevent non-resident from sleeping in mosques in order to encourage refugees to register with police.

The country is predominantly Christian with 10% registered Muslims or people following animist beliefs.
