Judge Thokozile Masipa pronounced her ruling on Tuesday in Pistorius' murder trial. The high-profile seven-month trial finally concluded with Pistorius being jailed for five years for culpable homicide. After 10 months of imprisonment, he will be eligible to apply to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, the judge said.

Even as the prospect of an early release was met with a fierce backlash on social media and amid campaigners against gender violence, Steenkamp's mother, June, said that "it doesn't matter" and that Pistorius is going to pay "something". June added that justice had been served, reported The Guardian.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2014 and has maintained that he mistook her for an intruder in his Pretoria home in South Africa.
