The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) declared on Sunday the beginning of the Ghadab al-Firat, Euphrate’s Anger, campaign.

The offensive will see nearly 30,000 soldiers, men and women, kurds and arabs, boots-on-the-ground advancing towards the Syrian city of Raqqa, the capital of the Islamic State (IS) in the country.

The SDF is a diversified army, but the organisation of the Syrian Kurds YPG, the people’s protection unites, are believed to be its true backbone. The US declared to have finally took the decision to support the SDF guaranteeing complete air support, as they did in 2015 during the battle for the liberation of Kobane.

The  operation starts in the middle of the Mosul offensive, a major ongoing military operation which aims to reconquer the Iraqi capital of the IS. The coordinate attack is undoubtedly a major blow for the IS which risks to lose its two major  towns.

It will be very difficult for the terrorist organisation to carry on the narrative of being a State and most likely it will heavily affect the moral of their remaining fighters causing them to surrender.

The US decision to support the Kurds comes regardless of the possible fallouts that it will have on the relation with Turkey, the strategical starting point for the many US-led  military operations in Western Asia.

Ankara stated repeatedly that it would have not accepted in any case a major role for the Kurds in the offensive against Raqqa.

Less than a month ago, Turkey President Erdogan signed a gas pipeline deal with his Russian counterpart.

Turkish declarations are based on the fear that an eventual success will give the Kurds the legitimacy to request an autonomous region located in the vast north Syrian region of Rojava which they control since two years after they have reconquered from the IS.

In case Syrian Kurds will have the chance to present their request in Geneva and receive a positive answer, they will form a united region running all along the Turkish border.

The US support comes in a moment where Turkey is conducting a total aggression against many Kurdish citizens and organisation active on its soil which is costing ankara a fierce international criticism. Turkish authorities blocked internet in the southern part of the country, where they have been carrying on bombings since months.

The co-leaders of the left-wing pro-Kurds People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag, the third political force in Turkey, have been arrested together with several  other members of the party.

The  announcement of a US and SDF alliance for Euphrate’s Anger campaign leaves Turkey isolated in the fight against the IS for the second time after the ban Iraq posed on their participation to the Mosul offensive.

Just a handful of days before the elections, the US government chose the perfect timing to announce the attack, presenting themselves as the most active actor in the fight against the IS.

TURKEY ISOLATED?
