Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Sri Lankan President-elect Maithripala Sirisena for his victory in the just concluded election and invited him to visit New Delhi.

"PM Narendra Modi invites President-elect Sirisena to visit India and writes that he looks forward to receiving him in India," said PMO on twitter.

"I wish you all the success in building a peaceful & prosperous SL, on foundations of genuine & effective reconciliation: PM to Mr. Sirisena," PMO said in another tweet.

In his letter to Sirisena, Prime Minister Modi said that he looks forward to working with the new leadership in Colombo to carry forward the relations between the two nations to a new level.

"PM Narendra Modi has written a letter to Sri Lanka's President-elect, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, congratulating him on the victory," said PMO on twitter.

"Your historic victory is a tribute to your vision for SL & your capacity to connect with people's yearning for change: PM to Mr. Sirisena," the tweet added.

"I look forward to working with you to take our relationship to a new level for benefit of our people & our region: PM writes to Mr. Sirisena," PMO said in another tweet.

Sirisena has been declared elected as the seventh President of Sri Lanka. According to reports, he has defeated incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa by four and a half lakh votes.

Rajapaksa, who had served two terms as the president and was seeking a record third consecutive term, earlier in the day conceded defeat to his challenger.

On Thursday, Sri Lankans voted in large numbers. The Election Commission in the island nation said that on an average there was an estimated more than 65-70 % voting in most places.

In all, 19 candidates contested the elections, but the main fight was between Rajapaksa and Sirisena.
