Former Pakistani President General (retired) Pervez Musharraf has reportedly gone on record to claim that he was "the man who brought real democracy to Pakistan."

The former military strongman, who is currently being tried for treason and facing charges for the murders of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Nawab Akbar Bughti, added that people assume that there is a democratic set-up in place just because there are elections, reported The Express Tribune. He remarked, "Elections are just the beginning of democracy."

While speaking about Pakistan's relations with India, Musharraf said that India should start treating Pakistan as a sovereign state and not "ask us to submit to them," only then will it clear the tensions between the two nations. He also stressed on the role of cricket diplomacy to foster better ties between India and Pakistan.
