Pakistan?s ?Mother Teresa? Ruth Katherina Martha, was honoured with a state funeral on Saturday in Karachi.

Martha, a German-born nun and physician, was considered to be a symbol of selflessness and devotion.

She was known for dedicating her life to eradicate leprosy, tuberculosis and other diseases in Pakistan.

Martha?s casket was carried by armed forces personnel into St. Patrick?s Cathedral in Karachi with her coffin draped in the Pakistani flag, local media reported.

She was laid to rest in Gora Qabaristan, Karachi's oldest graveyard after her final rites were performed at the church.

She is the first ever Christian woman to be honoured with a state funeral in the Muslim dominated country.

Hundreds of people attended the service at the cathedral, including President Mamnoon Hussain, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair, Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) Vice Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, each of whom laid floral wreaths on her grave as a mark of respect.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had earlier announced a state funeral for Martha saying: "The entire nation is indebted to Ruth Pfau for her selflessness and unmatched services for eradication of leprosy."

Martha died on August 10 at the age of 87 in Karachi.
