Nearly 2,000 schools were destroyed in unprecedented rain and floods in Pakistan's worst hit province of Punjab where 241 were killed, authorities said today. Eastern Pakistan's Punjab province has been worse affected by the devastating floods.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) spokesperson Reema Zubari said that nearly 2,000 schools in Punjab have been destroyed in addition to other losses caused by it. More than 2 million people and nearly 17,000 houses have been fully destroyed, she added.

The floods were triggered after massive monsoon rains that started on September 3 and continued for several days. 321 people have been killed due to floods and rains which include 241 in Punjab, 66 in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and 14 in Gilgit-Baltistan regions.

The government has started the assessment of the losses but some media reports suggested that the net loss would be around USD $15 billion.

Meanwhile, the flood waters inundating large swathe of areas in Punjab have entered southern Sindh province. But bulk of it has been dispersed in Punjab, reducing threat of losses in Sindh.

The flood forecasting division in Punjab's capital Lahore said that the threat of current flood will be over by the end of this week when the excessive waters would be drained into the Arabian Sea.
