US president Barack Obama and his Democratic Party predecessor Bill Clinton offered words of encouragement to troubled golfer Tiger Woods after news broke about his sexual dalliances, the Golf Digest has reported.

"President Obama made a personal call to offer encouragement. So did Bill Clinton, whose experience might be particularly instructive," the magazine reported.

Golf Digest also confirmed Woods visited the Gentle Path clinic in Mississippi for sex rehab, reportedly entering the facility with a "whatever it takes" mentality.

Woods' wife Elin Nordegren has visited the golfer at the clinic, and the couple and their kids spent Christmas together in Southern California, the magazine reported.

The magazine quoted Woods' mother Tida as saying her son will "face himself" and "solve the problem."

Tida adds, "When he comes back, he will still love to play and love to win...because his closet will be cleaned out and his mind will be free."
