Wood is a basic raw material but the excessive demand of wood has led to large scale tropical deforestation, acknowledged the Norwegian Government.

The Norwegian government has decided to not buy products that are in any form procured from or that are involved in activities related to tropical deforestation.

This implies that government contracts will also no longer be awarded to companies that cuts down trees.

AT A GLANCE
The Norwegian government has decided to set an example by refusing to buy any products associated with tropical deforestation. This also means that the government will no longer grant contracts to any company that cuts down trees. This is an important step in the right direction and must be viewed as an example for other countries.

Some of the most affected forests are those in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

Millions of people depend on forests and deforestation not only harms nature but also affects the livelihood of these people.

Norway has urged other countries like UK and Germany to also take a similar step in order to make this world a healthier and greener place.
