One of the unfortunate fallouts of the recent US presidential elections is the alarming rise in the number of in incidents of racism across the country. In a recent segment on BBC Newsnight, an interview with two personalities, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and editor of the conservative publication The American Spectator, R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr took a turn for the worse.

It started when the interviewer asked the pointed question, “The first ever black president will be followed by a president who’s been endorsed by the KKK. Where does that leave you?” The conservative responded with a look of incredulity stating that he couldn’t imagine anything  more ‘marginal’ to the American elections than the notorious clan in question. He went on to vehemently refusing to accept that the KKK had anything to do with a Republican or Donald Trump.

Adichie then pointed out his clear refusal to accept the reality of the KKK’s existence, their endorsement of Trump and the fact that they are white supremacists.

The turning point happened when Adichie cut off Tyrrell, stating that as a white man, he didn’t get to define what racism is. She goes on the pointing out that Trump was on many occasions objectively racist during his campaign, to which Tyrell vehemently refuted. The segment ended with the interviewer leaving the question of whether Trump would govern in the same manner in which he ran his campaign.

The video has been viewed over 840,000 times since it was uploaded, and interestingly has a near even split of likes and dislikes (about 4,500 each.) It’s clear this is a touchy subject, one around which much clarity is expected in the months ahead.
