Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on a five-day visit to the US on Friday, holding out an assurance that India is "open and friendly" for business and innovations. The Prime Minister, who has a power-packed schedule, both in New York and Washington, with nearly 50 engagements, is due to deliver his maiden address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday during his three-day stay in New York.

The meeting, which was Prime Minister's first official engagement after arriving here, was also aimed at understanding how the New York police metamorphosed after the 9/11 terror attacks in which over 3,000 people were killed and landmark twin towers of World Trade Center were destroyed. Narendra Modi received a warm welcome by the huge Indian-American community. Hundreds of supporters stood outside the hotel where Modi was slated to stay in New York. The entire mood was of jubilation with supporters repeatedly chanting "Har Har Modi", "Vande Mataram", "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". It also led to a traffic jam in the busy Madison Avenue Area of New York City. Dressed in a maroon jacket and black trousers, Modi greeted everyone and said namaste. A special barricade was set up by local authorities to control the crowd.
Earlier the Indian Prime Minister was received at the airport by Indian Ambassador to the US, S Jaishankar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just arrived in New York. The Indian Ambassador to USA and other officials welcomed the Prime Minister at the airport.
He will be meeting top US officials, businessmen and US President Barack Obama in the course of his 5-day US trip. He will also be addressing UN General Assembly and is scheduled to meet leaders of different countries during his stay in the US.
On Friday, Modi is scheduled to meet New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.
Modi, 64, flew into New York's JFK airport on a special Air India Boeing plane on the first leg of his maiden visit to the US as Prime Minister after a nearly nine-hour flight from Frankfurt where he had an overnight halt. As Indian-American community is gearing up to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Sunday at the iconic Madison Square Garden here, the organisers on Friday announced an elaborate programme for almost day-long event including a 360-degree rotating platform for him to address over 16,000 general public and about 2,600 VIP guests. The VIP guests would include elected officials of Indian origin including South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, although some others including Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal may not be able to come due to intense election season currently underway in the US.
Besides the main venue, there would be at least 50 other locations across the country where special arrangements have been made for live telecast of the Prime Minister's speech and other events that include a nearly two-hour long entertainment programme. There is a tremendous interest in the community in the US-India relationship and the event at Madison Square Garden has been oversubscribed by more than 10,000 people, the Indian American Community Foundation said.
Obama and the First Lady would host a private dinner for the visiting leader on September 29, soon after he arrives from New York, after attending the annual session of the UN General Assembly. Court summons against Narendra Modi: Sitting Heads of State enjoy immunity, says United States
A New York court had yesterday issued summons against Modi for his alleged role in 2002 communal riots in Gujarat when he was the state's chief minister. However, the United States said today that visiting heads of State not only enjoy immunity from American lawsuits but also they cannot be personally served or handed court summons.
Meanwhile, India on Friday rubbished as "frivolous and malicious attempt" the case filed in a New York court against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged role in 2002 communal riots in Gujarat during his chief ministership, saying "vested interests" have raked up the matter to "vitiate" the atmosphere during his visit.
