Indian-origin historian Tapan Raychaudhuri dies in UK

Tapan Raychaudhuri, an Indian-origin historian of modern South Asia, died following long illness in the UK. He was 90.

Raychaudhuri died on Wednesday in Oxford after he failed to recover from a stroke he suffered a year ago. A distinguished historian, Raychaudhuri was a Reader in Modern South Asian History at St. Antony's College, Oxford, from 1973 to 1992. Raychaudhuri is survived by his wife Pratima Raychaudhuri and daughter Sukanya Wignaraja.

After his retirement from Oxford in 1993, Raychaudhuri continued to lecture, travel and write till last year. Expressing condolences on his demise, Professor Margaret MacMillan, the Warden of St Antony's College said, "Dr Tapan Raychaudhuri was a much valued member of this College for many years. He was a highly distinguished scholar whose work over many years contributed significantly to the understanding of modern India. He was an excellent teacher who inspired generations of students."
