Google has paid tribute to Leo Tolstoy by dedicating a Google Doodle on the Russian author's 186th birthday. Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, and died from pneumonia at Astapovo train station at the age of 82 in 1910. He is a towering figure in Russian literature and is considered one of the greatest novelists of all time.

The doodle has been created by illustrator Roman Muradov, with the help of Google’s team.  The slideshow on Google Doodle begins with an image of a bearded Tolstoy where he can be seen writing at his desk by candlelight.

The doodle also has scenes from the most famous works of Tolstoy - Anna Karenina and War and Peace, as well as from his novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

War and Peace was first published in 1869 and is set in the early 1800s. It details the  French invasion of Russia seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families. The novel is written four volumes and includes actual historical figures like Napoleon and Alexander I.

Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel. It was published in installments in The Russian Messenger. The novel is the story of a Anna Karenina, a married aristocrat and her affair with Count Vronsky. A parallel story in the novel narrates the life and personal struggles of Konstantin Levin, a land owner from the countryside. The novel explores ideas of marriage, jealousy and fidelity as well as the feudal system of Russia.

Considered the best of his later work, The Death of Ivan Ilyich tells the story of the death of a high-court judge. Ivan Ilyich Golovin injures himself while hanging up curtains in his apartment, following which his health quickly deteriorates. Doctors are left mystified by his condition, not knowing how to treat him.

Tolstoy is consider a master of realistic fiction. He was also a political reformer and a philosopher. His ideas on nonviolent resistance have influenced Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and James Bevel.
