Ghana teacher who went viral for blackboard drawing of MS Word finally gets computers
A teacher in Ghana’s Sekyedomase town has become latest internet sensation after his photo teaching MS Word to his students with help of drawing on a blackboard went viral.
Wait, the story doesn’t end there. After the viral photo, many were moved to tears with some decided to help the computerless kids in the Ghana town.
Among those who helped Richard Appiah Akoto and his students were a Saudi Arabian student and an Indian company.
Amirah Alharthi, a Saudi PhD student living in the UK sent a laptop to the students of Betenase M-A Junior High School.
Indian IT major NIIT also decided to help the children.
‘We saw the news getting viral on Facebook and were so touched by the teacher’s dedication that we decided to support the school with the best we could do as an IT training organisation,’ NIIT’s Ashish Kumar was quoted as saying by Scoopwhoop.
‘We took a printout of the post and discussed the matter with our group CEO Kapil Gupta. He is the one who decided to sponsor five new desktops and books for the school and a new laptop for the teacher as a part of our social and corporate responsibility,’ Kumar added.
Not only this, Akoto will get a special training at the Microsoft. According to an NPR report, Microsoft spokesperson Sarah Alamshaw said that that the company will give Akoto a laptop and a voucher for professional development training under the Microsoft Certified Educator Program, to help him better integrate ICT into his teaching.
The NPR report also said that Akoto was appreciated at Microsoft’s Singapore event. "Your work has really inspired the world. It really shows the amazing innovation and commitment and passion that teachers have for helping their students get ready for the future," Anthony Salcito, vice president of Worldwide Education at Microsoft said while hailing this Ghana teacher.
