Multiple reports claim that a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight which flew from Karachi to Saudi Arabia had seven passengers stand in the aisle after staff allegedly boarded extra people.

According to Dawn, on January 20, the seven people were given handwritten boarding cards and were scrambling for seats as the Boeing 777 took off. The report added that flight PK743 to Medina only had the capacity to carry 409 passengers and but had 416 on board. This led to having the extra seven passengers stand in the aisle throughout the duration of the flight.

Carrying additional passengers is a breach of safety regulations, The Guardian reported. The passengers with no seats would not have oxygen masks in case of an emergency and would cause a congestion if there was a need to evacuate.

Anwar Adil, the flight’s captain, told Dawn that he only knew of the extra passengers after the plane had taken off.

A spokesman for PIA told the BBC that an internal investigation into the incident was underway.
