Antonis Mavropoulos, a Greek passenger scheduled to board the Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines, missed his flight and is now calling the devastating Sunday his 'lucky day.'

Mavropoulos is president of the International Solid Waste Association, a non-profit organisation. He was travelling to Nairobi to attend the assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), reports Athens News Agency.

He put up a post on Facebook titled 'My Lucky Day.' He wrote, "I was mad because nobody helped me to reach the gate on time." Mavropoulous reached the gate just two minutes after it was closed. He booked another flight but was not allowed onboard by the airport staff.

"They led me to the police station of the airport. The officer told me not to protest but to pray to God because I was the only passenger that didn't board the ET 302 flight that was lost.

"They said they couldn't let me go before cross-checking my identity, the reason I hadn't boarded the plane etc."

The airport authorities later explained to him that since he was the only passenger who did not get on board the doomed flight, they wanted to question him.

A Nairobi-bound Boeing 737 crashed six minutes after an early-morning takeoff from Addis Ababa Sunday, killing all 149 passengers, including four Indians, and eight crew on board, Ethiopian Airlines.

People holding passports from 32 countries and the UN were on board the plane which ploughed into a field just 60 kilometres (37 miles) southeast of Addis Ababa.
