Eight people, including four children, are in a serious condition among 28 French citizens injured in Thursday's attack in Barcelona, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Friday.

Le Drian, who was speaking in the Catalan capital after visiting some of the injured on Friday, said the total was still preliminary as local authorities had yet to identify all the victims.

"But everything leads us to believe that this figure will be definitive and that there are no French dead," he told reporters.

Spain on Friday mounted a sweeping anti-terror operation after a suspected Islamist militant drove a van into crowds in Barcelona, killing 13 people before fleeing, in what police suspect was one of multiple planned attacks.
