The Athens Geodynamic Institute says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5 has struck off the southern coast of the Peloponnese in southern Greece. No damage or injuries were reported immediately.

The US Geological Survey gave the same preliminary magnitude. The quake occurred at 10:17 local time (07:17 GMT) about 35 kilometers southwest of the city of Kalamata and 55 kilometers southwest of Sparta, with the epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS said.

Local media reported the temblor was strongly felt in the area, but that no damage or injuries were reported. Greece is located in a seismically active area of the world, and frequently suffers earthquakes. The vast majority do not cause significant damage.
