In a first, US President Donald Trump continued a tradition started by his predecessor Barack Obama and lit a diya to celebrated Diwali at the White House.

The US President shared a video message on his Facebook page, where he not only talked about 'the Hindu Festival of Lights' but also reiterated his trust in 'very strong relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi'.

Talking about the Diwali celebrations, President Trump said, 'Diwali is one of the most important celebrations in the Hindu religion. A time of peace and prosperity for the New Year, it is a tradition that is held dear by more than 1 billion Hindus worldwide and more than 2 million Hindus in the United States. It is also celebrated by millions of Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains in America, India and around the world.'

In a special mention for India and Indian democracy, he said, 'we especially remember the People of India, the home of the Hindu faith, who have built the world’s largest democracy.'

Last year, Barack Obama had lit the first-ever diya at the Oval Office.

In his special Diwali address, Obama had said, 'This year, I was honoured to kindle the first-ever diya in the Oval Office —— a lamp that symbolises how darkness will always be overcome by light. It is a tradition that I hope future Presidents will continue.'

In fact, Obama was the first ever US President who personally celebrated Diwali at the White House in 2009.

“I was proud to be the first President to host a Diwali celebration at the White House in 2009, and Michelle and I will never forget how the people of India welcomed us with open arms and hearts and danced with us in Mumbai on Diwali,” Obama had said.
