Chefs across the US are creating deep-fried treats using unusual foods, much to the delight of junk-food lovers at the State Fair of Texas.

The State Fair of Texas is known as the Fried Food Capital of Texas, but it may well be the fried food capital of the world.

The fair has held an annual “friendly food fight” among concessionaires called the Big Tex Choice Awards contest since 2005, the New York Daily News reported.

Trophies are awarded for the best tasting and most creative dishes.

Carey Risinger, the fair’s senior vice president of food, beverage and retail, said the entries always seem to surprise him.

“We think that everything that is edible has been deep fried at one point in time, but then we had deep fried jambalaya and fried cinnamon rolls with bacon, and both were great,” he said.

The State Fair of Texas is home to the deep fried margarita, from Desperados, a Mexican restaurant in Dallas, and deep fried beer.

Cadbury Creme Eggs can be deep fried, but you don’t want to try to do the same to York Peppermint Patties.

The former consists of funnel cake made with margarita mixer that is fried, doused with more margarita and served in a salt-rimmed glass.

Chris Sell and his Brooklyn restaurant, ChipShop, are credited with the creation of the fried Twinkie.

Deep fried beer, the 2010 winner of the “Most Creative” award, has a ravioli look to it. The beer is fried inside salty pretzel-like dough.

Another eyebrow-raising fair fixture is the fried bubble gum.

The name is slightly deceiving, because bubble gum extract-infused marshmallows are batted and fried rather than actual gum balls or chewing gum sticks.

The bright pink marshmallows are topped with blue icing and then dusted with powdered sugar.

At the very least, this colorful combination looks pretty, and it took home the “Most Creative” prize in 2011.
