The Dalai Lama, who is undergoing treatment at a US hospital, on Saturday said he is doing "very well", as he greeted Tibetans on New Year.

"I want to tell you that I am doing very well.... the treatment only takes few minutes everyday, but it will take time to complete the treatment. It is nothing complicated nor serious.

"There's nothing to worry about. I am relaxed and taking it easy," the Dalai Lama was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Tibetan "government-in-exile".

The 80-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, who is at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for over a fortnight, said he is undergoing "precautionary prostate treatment".

"I want to take this opportunity to convey my greetings to our people, ordained and lay, young and old, especially those inside Tibet, as well as those in exile.

"Since the Tibetan new year is approaching, I want to wish you Tashi Delek (Tibetan greetings)," he said and thanked all who have been praying for his well being. I want to tell you to not worry at all," he said.

"I appreciate everyone who has prayed for me and exerted efforts on my behalf," he said. He also urged the people to "create the causes of happiness, and live your life benefiting others and not harming them".
