Accusing the Dalai Lama of pursuing independence of Tibet in a "disguised way", China today said the Tibetan spiritual leader should stop all "separatist and destructive activities" for progress in reconciliation talks.
Criticising President Barack Obama's meeting with Dalai Lama, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement here that the US should "stop conniving and supporting anti-China, secessionist forces which pursue Tibet independence".
Referring to US clarifications that Washington does not support Tibetan independence, Qin accused the Dalai Lama of attempting to pursue independence in a "disguised way" by advocating the so-called "middle way" and a "Greater Tibet". "This is what the Chinese government and people will never accept," Qin said.
The Chinese central government has always kept the door open for contact and discussions with the Dalai Lama, he said.
Representatives of both sides met several times in the past but their talks made no headway. "If the Dalai Lama really wishes to achieve progress in contact and discussions, he must reflect on his own words and deeds in a thorough way and stop all activities of separatist and destructive nature," Qin said.
Separately, an article published by state-run Xinhua news agency said the Dalai Lama took to the "middle way" of seeking autonomy after failing to get international support for his demand of independence for Tibet. "The Dalai clique claim the 'middle way' is within the framework of China's constitution, and nothing more than 'a high degree of autonomy' over a proposed 'Greater Tibet'," the article said. "Though the 'middle way' appears to respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and does not specifically seek 'Tibet independence', it is at odds with China's constitution and state system in every conceivable way. It is nothing but smoke and mirrors, camouflage and deceit," it said.
