The move came amid a normalisation of ties between the two countries, reported the BBC. The Caribbean nation's presence on the terror list had been a key sticking point for Cuba during talks to reopen embassies.

Obama said on Tuesday that Cuba had not provided support for international terrorism over the last six months and had assured that it will not do so in the future as well. The decision however, was condemned by Republican Senator Marco Rubio who claimed that the nation remained a state sponsor of terrorist activities.

It came after Obama announced a historic thaw in relations between the two countries in December.
