Chinese police have launched investigations into the recent spread of obscene video clips online, more than a fortnight after a high-profile sex-tape shot in a Beijing clothing store went viral.

The National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications has asked police to probe such cases including two videos which went viral this week, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The two videos are believed to have been filmed in eastern Zhejiang Province and southwestern Sichuan Province, the internet watchdog said in a statement. Police have tracked down the suspects involved and the cases are under investigation, the report said.

Beijing police last month detained four people in connection with the dissemination of a sex-tape believed to have been filmed in the fitting room of a Uniqlo clothes store in the city's upmarket Sanlitun district. In today's statement, the office denounced the spreading of such obscenity online as unethical, saying it deserved serious punishment.

It called on local authorities to organise checks and punish websites for violations. The office also encouraged the public to report offenses via a telephone hotline or social media accounts set up for the purpose.

Two days ago, China unveiled measures to tighten cyber security, in a crackdown on online pornography and rumour mongering to prevent hacking and ensure data security. Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has said it will crack down on pornography, rumours or information about terrorism, guns or drugs.
