British PM Theresa May calls Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif to discuss bilateral affairs

British premier Theresa May on Tuesday called Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed various bilateral affairs following the UK's decision to leave the EU.

Radio Pakistan reported that May told Sharif that there "will be no adverse effects on the bilateral relations after Great Britain exits the EU". She said the Britain strongly supports the democratic system of Pakistan adding Pakistan's development and democracy are interlinked.

"Pakistan and the UK will work together as bilateral partners. Great Britain is committed to work with Pakistan in security related matters and strengthening democracy," she said and also expressed a desire to visit Pakistan in the coming months.

Sharif congratulated her for becoming the second woman prime minister of her country which he said was a "historic appointment".

"Theresa May's appointment reflects the faith and confidence the people of UK have reposed in her ability to steer the country at this historic time," Sharif said.
