A UKIP councilor has blamed the government’s decision to legalize gay marriage in Britain to be the reason behind the recent storms and heavy floods.

David Silvester claimed that David Cameron had acted arrogantly against the Gospel, the BBC reported.

In a letter to local paper Henley Standard, Silvester said that he had warned Cameron in April 2012 that the disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill.

He wrote that the scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war.

Silvester said that Cameron went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.

UKIP said Silvester’s views were not the party’s belief but defended his right to state his opinions.
