The United Nations will be hosting leaders from around the world to develop a global development agenda, called the Global Goal, for the next 15 years, in New York later in September.

On his blogBill Gates' posted Global Goals is a "great opportunity to take stock of how the world’s poorest are doing".

15 years ago, world leaders had previously adopted the Millennium Development Goals, Gates revealed. "The goals focused the world’s attention on disease and poverty, and by using data to measure progress, we could see which countries were succeeding and which were falling behind," said Gates.

Gates stated it was because of that system that people are better off today, than they were back then."The fraction of the world’s population living in extreme poverty has dropped by half since 1990—and the MDGs played a key role in driving these improvements," said Gates.

Gates posted a video of Dr Chris Murray from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, to explain the drastic drop in child mortality since 2000 and how the Millennium Development Goals helped.
