Former United states President Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea Clinton has given birth to a baby girl.

The 34-year-old correspondent took to Twitter to share her happy news and wrote that she and her husband Marc Mezvinsky were "full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky", reported Mashable.

Meanwhile her parents, the former US President and Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, retweeted the message of their first grandchild's arrival just after midnight on their individual accounts.

Earlier, during the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative in New York, the former president had accidentally hinted that the baby might be a boy when he gave a brief pause after saying that he wanted his "grandson.." and continued to say "or granddaughter" to be respectful and look at the world with wonder.

Clinton had clarified that he didn't know the sex of the baby, as did Chelsea and her husband, since they wanted it to be a surprise. Chelsea Clinton announced her pregnancy in April while sitting with her mother in side-by-side armchairs on a stage at a New York City event on empowering women.

It remains unclear how the birth of the first Clinton grandchild will affect the political ambitions of Hillary Clinton, who is considering a run for the White House in 2016.

Former president Clinton told reporters in Davos, Switzerland, in 2011: "I would like to have a happy wife, and she won't be unless she's a grandmother... It's something she wants more than she wanted to be president."
