Bangladesh tops 32 nations in climate risk chart

Bangladesh is at the top of a list of 32 countries that face extreme risks because of climate change.

According to a study undertaken by UK researcher Maplecroft, 32 countries out of 196 surveyed face that level of threat.

The Bath, England-based analyst forwarded an e-mailed statement in this regard to a foreign news agency.

Apart from Bangladesh, the other nine top countries expected to suffer from climate change aftereffects are Sierra Leone and South Sudan, Nigeria, Chad, Haiti, Ethiopia, the Philippines, the Central African Republic and Eritrea.

The threatened nations all depend heavily on agriculture, which accounts for 28% of their combined economic output relying on farm-related revenue, and 65% of the working population employed in the sector, according to Maplecroft.

The climate risk combined with food insecurity act as "threat multipliers" escalating the danger of civil conflict, it said.

Other nations deemed at extreme climate risk included India, Pakistan and Guatemala.
