The Bangladesh Government on Sunday banned militant group Ansar Al Islam, which claimed it was involved in targeted killings including that of an LGBT activist Xulhaz Mannan.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the notification on Sunday saying that the outfit is a militant group and is involved in anti-state activities and is  a threat to public security, reports the Daily star.

Previously, during the time of Mannan's murder, the organisation identified itself as the Bangladesh branch of al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent.

The group also claimed responsibility of killings of secular activists including those of Niladri Chattopadhyay in 2016 and Nazim Uddin Samad in March both in Dhaka.
