Eleven "hardcore terrorists" have have been arrested here in a joint operation by Pakistani military and police personnel on the eve of the country's Independence Day, the army said on Sunday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations media wing of the Pakistan army, the operation was launched on an intelligence report about the presence of terrorists in the suburbs of the city last night.

"The operation continued for more than three hours late on Saturday night and led to the arrest of 11 members of a sleeper cell of a terror organisation in Shahdara, a thickly populated area of low income group," said an official of ISPR.

The arrested terrorists belong to Jamaatul Ahrar, a splinter group of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also seized. The official said the terrorists were planning to attack celebrations related to Independence Day and sensitive buildings.

Earlier, the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) and Punjab Home Department had issued separate alerts about possible terror attacks at Wagah and Ganda Singh borders with India by the Taliban during Independence Day celebrations.

A deadly terrorist attack had hit Wagah in November 2014, when over 60 people were killed and 200 others injured minutes after the flag-lowering ceremony at the border. Meanwhile, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab Police said some 96 'combing operations' have recently been conducted in various cities of the province including Lahore in which about 200 terror suspects have been taken into custody. Arms, ammunition and explosive material have also been recovered from their possession.
