United States President Donald Trump cleared the air about whether the US would not go into Syria. The statement comes amidst complaints that his aides are saying different things about Syria.

Speaking to the New York Post, President Trump was critical of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, calling him 'a butcher' and 'a barbarian' for using sarin gas on his own people. "Having said that, last week's missile strike was not the start of the campaign to oust the dictator. Our big mission is to get rid of ISIS," said President Trump. “That’s where it’s always been. But when you see kids choking to death, you watch their lungs burning out, we had to hit him and hit him hard.”

He called the attack, which involved 59 cruise missiles fired from two Navy destroyers, “an act of humanity.”

While speaking of Russia, Trump added that while the US wasn't exactly on the same wavelength with Russia, he hoped for Russian President Vladimir Putin's cooperation.

Sean Spicer says Trump wants to 'destablise' Middle East

Soon after his gaffe that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said he did not want his comments on Hitler to distract from Trump's attempts "to destabilise the region."

"I came out to make sure we stay focused on what the president is doing and his decisive action. I needed to make sure that I clarified, and not was in any shape or form any more of a distraction from the president's decisive action in Syria and the attempts that he is making to destabilize the region and root out ISIS out of Syria," Spicer said.

Later in the interview, however, Spicer clarified that the U.S. wants to "bring stability" to the region.
