In order to crack down on fake news, Apple's CEO Tim Cook is calling on tech companies to create a tool that will help stop the flow of falsehoods without infringing on freedom of speech, The Guardian reported.

Cook suggests governments need to lead information campaigns to curb the alarming trend, in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

"We are going through this period of time right here where unfortunately some of the people that are winning are the people that spend their time trying to get the most clicks, not tell the most truth," Cook told the Daily Telegraph. "It's killing people’s minds, in a way."

Ultimately Cook believes “truthful, reliable, non-sensational, deep news outlets will win” over fake news, which he says is "short-term".

According to The Guardian, even though both sides of the 2016's presidential election were affected by false facts, Trump's campaign was seen as more prone to false reports. Even the crowd numbers on his inauguration day sparked a heated debate.

Trump's top advisor Kellyanne Conway recently made headlines for characterising Trump administration’s falsehoods as “alternative facts”.

A study published in January by Stanford University and New York University discovered that in the run-up to the US election day, "fake anti-Clinton stories had been shared 30 million times on Facebook, while those favouring her were shared eight million times," reported The Guardian .

Cook is calling for action to combat fake news' reach and use "the modern version of a public service announcement campaign".
