A hit man convicted of murdering Anni Dewani, the wife of an Indian-origin British billionaire Shrien Dewani, has claimed that he was told by Shrien that he had 'wanted his spouse dead'.

Mziwamadoda Qwabe told a South African court that he demanded £830 for the contract of killing Anni and spent a day plotting the murder. Qwabe also said that he was told by Shrien's hired taxi driver about the offer.

Dewani was extradited from the UK in April and has been accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife during their honeymoon in Cape Town in November 2010 by hiring three South Africans. Qwabe is one of the three men.

Dewani has denied the charges claiming that the couple was hijacked at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in a taxi. He escaped unharmed but his wife's body was found in the abandoned car the next day.

The three South Africans involved in the murder have been tried and convicted and are serving jail sentences between 18 years to life.
