A tsunami warning has been issued after strong 8.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the southern coast in Alaska, US on Tuesday.

The 8.2 magnitude earthquake hit 256 km (157 miles) southeast of Chiniak, Alaska at a depth of 10 km at 0931 GMT on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

A tsunami alert was issued for parts of Alaska and Canada and a tsunami watch for the entire US west coast, the US Tsunami Warning System said.

However, the tsunami alert has been cancelled for Hawaii which was earlier issued due to the strong earthquake that hit the Gulf of Alaska.

"Based on all available data there is no tsunami threat to the state of Hawaii. Therefore, the tsunami watch for Hawaii is now cancelled," said Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Last year, Hurricane Harvey in US devastated Texas with catastrophic floods that killed 38 people and left tens of thousands homeless. Around 13 million people battled "catastrophic" flooding and torrential rains in the storm-ravaged Texas where Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc, turning streets into raging rivers.

Soldiers and police in helicopters and high-water trucks rescued thousands of Texans stranded by floodwater. Around 980,000 fled their homes voluntarily after being concerned that swollen reservoirs and rivers could bring new flooding.

Most of Houston's larger companies remain closed through the Labor Day holiday. Schools, bus services, airports remained closed and even hospitals struggled to stay open.

It was the costliest natural disaster in the US history that cost a whopping $160 billion in economic damages in Texas.

Harvey was the strongest storm in more than 50 years to hit Texas when it came ashore as a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. That is the second most powerful category of storm measured by the speed of sustained winds
